What’s better than a baked butternut squash? One that’s smothered in raclette cheese…

Vegetarians turn away now! Grilled steak with our butternut squash roasted with raclette cheese.

Hola y adiós! I’m flying off to Barcelona today for a few days for work. In all honesty, I’ve been a bundle of nerves these last few weeks getting ready for this conference, and while it’s like my umpteenth time working there, the stress never gets easier. If anything, it gets worse! I’ve barely seen … Continue reading

Can you stay for dinner?’s cinna minis (mini cinnamon rolls)

Before it's drizzled over with fondant

Finding (food) love online – Can you stay for dinner? Guuuuuurrrrrgggghhhhhh….! If you don’t know what that sound is meant to be, it’s actually Homer Simpson drooling whenever he thinks about food. I have had exactly the same ‘guuurrggghh’ moment this weekend – I have found a new blog that I have fallen in love … Continue reading

Vegetarian delights: A savoury fried (white) carrot cake from South-east Asia (chai tow kway)

My savoury white carrot cake - fried with pink pickled ginger, eggs, garlic and spring onions. Do go to your Chinese grocery shop to try and find the traditional pickled turnips/radish though - it's really the traditional ingredients that you fry with the carrot cake.

South-east Asian street food at its best :) One of my earliest posts for thebigfatnoodle was about how I taught myself to make a local dish from South-east Asia called fried carrot cake. Traditionally, it uses mooli (also called daikon) – a white radish – but I can’t always get hold of this unless I … Continue reading

Simple salads: Apple, bresaola and cambozola salad

I love putting fruit in my salads and apples always work with cheese, and the cambozola went particularly well with the bresaola.

Changing a lifetime of bad eating habits I am really, really annoyed with myself. I’ve been looking forwarding to making and posting this recipe for some time now, but when I finally made it and took my usual pictures to show you, I forgot to add the toasted walnuts before I took the final snaps. … Continue reading

Pub review: The Lamb, Buckland, Oxfordshire

An espresso, a latte and these chocolate petit fours cost us £4.50! Amazing.

Puppy love My husband and I set off this morning to see a couple of bitches in Oxfordshire. You heard me, I said bitches! But before you think this is some story about handbags at dawn between me and some other women, don’t worry because the bitches I’m referring to are furry and of the … Continue reading

Crispy chilli beef

A MUCH tastier and better version of the classic crispy chilli beef than what your take-away will ever offer.

Crispy chilli beef – home-made beats take-away – no contest! Crispy chilli beef has to be one of the most popular dishes people order at Chinese restaurants or from take-aways. More often than not though, the crunchy strips of beef are so tough and so over fried that all you can taste is the greasy … Continue reading

Valentine’s Day – celebrate it because you want to and not because the calendar tells you to… Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, which I and many others I know cynically call Hallmark Day. I personally don’t believe that we need a special day to celebrate love when we should be celebrating it every moment of every … Continue reading

The Big Freeze is back! A stroll through my own backyard winter wonderland

This is the River Wey. The water's not quite frozen but at least it's clean ie no floating rubbish frozen onto the surface :)

No recipe today I’m afraid… in fact, I’ve not cooked all week but I’ll be back with some recipes soon enough. Meantime, do you fancy a virtual walk with me through my town in our little corner of England? Last weekend, our town was only lightly dusted with snow so our planned walk turned out … Continue reading

Video games, zombies and dinner Mr Monster: So our good friend Simon came down to stay and play video games a couple of weekends ago.
